Narcissism: Surviving the Self-Involved | Psychology Today

When I heard that my colleague and fellow PT blogger,?Meredith Resnick?a writer and licensed clinical social worker, had recently published an e-book on the topic of narcissim, I thought the topic might be of interest to readers of this blog, especially those who suspect that someone around them, either a friend or family member, may have the disorder.??

Irene:

What led you to write your e-book on the topic of narcissism?

Meredith:

I worked for two decades in healthcare, but it was through my personal journey in a few relationships that I began to learn, really learn, about narcissism, and its damaging effects. I wanted to heal from the effects, and it took me some time and a concerted effort to sort out exactly what was going on. There is a certain, convoluted, ?smoke-and-mirrors' aspect of the disease of narcissism, given all the projection that goes along with it. But once I began to understand and see the nuances, I felt my own healing from the relationships really take hold. I wanted to share what I'd learned to help other people who might be suffering from the same feelings I'd had (and others have had as well).?

Irene:

What are the hallmark signs of a narcissistic personality???

Meredith:

There are several, but here I'll mention three. I associate lack of empathy with narcissism, but also understand that a person who is narcissistic might appear to "care." I've found, for me, it's been helpful to view the relationship as a whole, to look at patterns. For example, non-empathy might appear as little digs, as a protracted period of coldness followed by what appears to be warmth (followed by icy coldness, and so on).

Projection is another key sign, which includes relegating their own (typically negative) feelings onto you, claiming they belong to you and/or that you alone are responsible for them feeling this way.

Another sign is a tendency to be exploitative in their relationships without even thinking about it, to get what they want in big and little ways.?

Irene:

Why do we often tend to miss these signs at first?

Meredith:

It may be because people with narcissism can and do present themselves quite charmingly. They may be fun; the life of the party. Or, they may be sweet and helpful, focusing on you and how great you are. When the tide turns with such individuals, it can come as a shock. (Bear in mind there are many truly authentically nice, kind, wonderful people. But with them, we won't experience the breach being discussed here. And when we experience the breach, we know it!)

Or, it may be for entirely different reasons. If a person was surrounded by self-absorbed people early in their lives, it's possible that person developed a kind of blind spot to problems in their friendships, or maybe they keep choosing friends who demand lots of attention. This might happen when an individual is not accustomed to keeping the focus on herself in a healthy way, and, so, finds friends who want her attention to be on them!?

Irene:

Is it possible to have a mutually supportive friendship with a narcissist or is the friendship doomed? Do narcissists ever change their stripes or do I simply need to walk away from a close friendship with a narcissist?

Meredith:

To these questions I would suggest re-evaluating what the individual really means by "mutually supportive," and encouraging them to think about what they like about the relationship, and accepting it for what it is. Perhaps two people can still have fun together, but maybe other aspects of the relationship they are seeking need to be found or developed in other friendships. ? ?

Meredith's new e-book, available on Amazon, is called?Narcissism: Surviving the Self-Involved - A Little Primer on Self-Care. Her work has appeared in Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Psychology Today, JAMA, Orange County Register, Culinate, Dancing at The Shame Prom and others. She is currently working on a companion e-book,?Stronger Every Day: 366 Thoughts, Meditations and Ideas to Help You Overcome the Effects of Narcissism?(2013).?

College Republicans have Congressman Harper visit, speak

Published:?Thursday, September 27, 2012

Updated:?Thursday, September 27, 2012 20:09

Congressman Gregg Harper visited Mississippi State University during his travel through northeast Mississippi on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rob Mellen, adviser to the College Republicans at MSU, said Harper has visited MSU in the past and spoke to many classes about government.

?We just simply invited him to come down and speak to the College Republicans group,? Mellen said. ?I work through his office with Marcy Scoggins who is one of his assistants. She handles his schedule and he agreed to come down, in fact, likes to come down and speak to the classes.?

Mellen also said aside from speaking to the College Republicans group, Harper also spoke to classes on campus including Whit Waide?s American Government class.

Mellen said Harper will be in Mississippi the next few days and made appearances at several events around Starkville.

In addition to two speaking engagements on campus Tuesday, Harper also visited a Starkville Fire Station that received federal funds, and toured local companies and spoke to Starkville High School Wednesday morning.

?It?s kind of a whirlwind tour of northeast Mississippi, but he?s engaging in what we call constituent service,? Mellen said.

Virginia Internship Program Connects Students with Employers

A new Virginia program gives internship opportunities to students of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while providing employers access to a pool of potential employees. The program, called the Commonwealth STEM Industry Internship Program (CSIIP), was announced Sept. 27 as a way to match employers with students while promoting local industry.

?The Commonwealth STEM Industry Internship Program works in concert with the governor?s focus on growing opportunity for more Virginians. CSIIP will provide the much-needed quality STEM students to employers while giving those students the access to the experience they will need to succeed,? Virginia Secretary of Education Laura Fornash said. ?By providing quality opportunities for the next generation of Virginia leaders in the STEM industry, this program will make the critical connection between Virginia?s exceptional STEM students and Virginia?s growing high-tech business community.?

Funded by Virginia and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, the program will create a centralized, online application system that will give students free access to paid summer internships. After creating a single application, students can apply to hundreds of Virginia-based companies at once or narrow their focus by applying to companies individually. The application process will open on Nov. 1 to students who are taking at least 12 credit hours per semester at an accredited Virginia university, college or community college, or an accredited out-of-state college or university.

More information can be found on the Virginia Space Grant Consortium website.

Video: Voter fraud scandal erupts in NC

>>> the no. gop is the latest to fire a firm under investigation for voter fraud in florida . the company known as strategic allied consulting has been repping republican efforts to get out the vote. the republican national committee paid the company nearly $3 million this year. a revelation that has the gop throwing punches.

>> it's totally different. we at this point have an allegation. that mere allegation has caused us to act swiftly and boldly and sever our ties with this firm because we have a zero tolerance when it comes to this. the on other side clearly engaged in a long time for inappropriate behavior. we don't believe it's appropriate and we wanted to make a swift and bold action to illustrate that.

>> let me go ahead and bring in nbc's national investigative correspondent michael isakoff. is this the first time this particular consultant has been accused of voter fraud ?

>> nathan sproul is a former executive director of the arizona republican party . he's been aaccused of election misconduct by democrats in the past, voter suppression , throwing out voter registration forms. none of them have led to criminal charges or any civil findings against him, but it has made him a somewhat controversial figure. so one of the things mr. sproul said and when the republican national committee hired him to do this, they wanted him to set a new firm up under a name that wasn't traceable to him so it would not be a problem or create problems and create new controversy over him. well, that turned out not to be the case, obviously. strategic allied consulting does link back to nathan sproul and employees of his firm linked to allegations of registration fraud in florida .

>> some of the information on the florida voter registration forms were trying to register people with addresses in new york, in one instance a couple was being reregistered to an address in miami that is a shell gas station .

>> right. what we have is we also have reports of reports of now in eight counties in florida under investigation. employees of this firm suspected of submitting suspicious, potentially fraudulent registration forms. i talked to nathan sproul last night. he's adamant in denying any wrongdoing by him. he said if anything he was the victim here by employees of his firm who he hired to go out and collect these forms. i think people will ask questions about what kind of oversight there was of the employees, and frankly, the similarities to the a.c.o.r.n. charges, which was pushed by republicans against a democratic-leaning firm.

>> michael, always digging deep for us. thank you, sir. do appreciate your time. have a great weekend.

>> thank you.

Minneapolis gunman kills four, shoots himself

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - A gunman opened fire inside a Minneapolis sign company on Thursday, killing five people including himself and wounding four others, police said.

Minneapolis Police spokesman Steve McCarty said five people were dead at Accent Signage Systems, including the gunman. Three others were in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and a forth had non-life threatening injuries, he said.

He declined to identify those killed or wounded, and said he did not know what connection the shooter may have had with the business, if any.

A representative from Accent Signage Systems could not be reached for comment. A July article in a local business publication said the company had 28 employees.

Police cordoned off the area around the company and held residents back.

RESIDENTIAL STREET

The company is located on a tree-lined residential street. "It's the only industrial business right in the middle of a residential neighborhood," Minneapolis Mayor R. T. Rybak said in a telephone interview with Reuters. "In a great neighborhood and a great business, we have a horrible tragedy."

Rybak said he could not remember anything similar ever happening in Minneapolis.

Governor Mark Dayton said in a statement: "I deplore this senseless violence. There is no place for it anywhere in Minnesota. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the innocent people killed or wounded."

The Minneapolis shooting comes a month after a work-related shooting near the Empire State Building in New York, which killed two people and wounded nine.

This followed an July mass shooting in a crowded cinema in Colorado and an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August, which rekindled debate about gun control in the United States.

Russian NGOs defy law naming them 'foreign agents'

MOSCOW (AP) ? Leading Russian non-government organizations said Thursday they would defy a new Kremlin law requiring those who receive funding from abroad to register as "foreign agents."

The heads of nine prominent NGOs have issued a joint statement saying they would ignore the law, which was approved by the Kremlin-controlled parliament over the summer in a bid to undermine the groups' credibility.

"We survived the Soviet power, and we'll survive this," Lyudmila Alexeyeva, a Soviet-era dissident who heads the Moscow Helsinki Group, said Thursday.

The law passed in July requires any NGO that receives foreign funding ? from governments, groups or private citizens ? and engages in vaguely defined political activity to register itself as a "foreign agent," provide detailed quarterly reports of its finances and identify itself as a foreign agent in any material it distributes.

Failure to comply would bring fines of up to 5,000 rubles (about $150) for members, 50,000 rubles ($1,150) for the heads of these organizations and up to 1 million rubles ($31,000) for the organizations themselves. Anyone who continues to participate in organizations that violated the rules can be fined up to 300,000 rubles ($9,000) or sent to prison for two years.

The law is part of a package of repressive bills initiated by the Kremlin after President Vladimir Putin's inauguration for a third term in May. Putin has repeatedly accused the U.S. of staging major protests against his rule to weaken Russia. His claims played well with his core support group of blue-collar workers and state employees, many of whom remain suspicious of the West.

The supporters of the new law described it as a necessary shield against foreign meddling in Russian affairs.

Alexander Sidyakin, one of the bill's authors, claimed during its passage that NGOs had "smeared" Russia's parliamentary and presidential elections last winter with "mud."

"We'll let citizens know whose megaphone this mud is crawling out of, and they can draw their own conclusions," he added.

Alexeyeva and other rights activists also criticized a plan by Radio Liberty, a station funded by the U.S. government, to shift its broadcasts to the Internet, urging it to stay on the airwaves.

"We cannot lose a station with an active civil stance based on the universal values of freedom, democracy, and human rights," they wrote in a letter, adding that these values "are under attack from the Russian government."

Earlier this month, Moscow declared an end to the U.S. Agency for International Development's two decades of work in Russia, saying it was using its money to influence elections ? a claim the U.S. denied.

And last week, parliament gave a quick preliminary approval to a new treason bill drafted by the main KGB successor agency that vastly expanded the definition of treason to include such activities as financial or consultative assistance to an international organization.

Lawmakers also gave the government sweeping powers to blacklist websites in July, ostensibly to combat child pornography. Last week, however, Russia's communications minister tweeted that the law could be used to shut access to YouTube over a U.S.-produced anti-Islam film that has provoked riots across the world.

The parliament is also considering making offending religious beliefs a criminal offense, punishable by up to five years in prison. The move follows a public outcry over the hooliganism conviction three members of feminist rock band Pussy Riot received in August for a "punk prayer" against Putin in Moscow's main cathedral.

Germany's jobless rate falls to 6.5 percent

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany's jobless rate fell to 6.5 percent in September thanks to a traditional seasonal improvement, official figures showed Thursday.

Still, the underlying trend continued to drift higher, underlining concerns that Europe's biggest economy is slowing down as economic problems around the euro area dent demand for German exports.

The Federal Labor Agency said the unadjusted jobless rate was down 0.3 percentage points compared with August, and that the number of people registered as unemployed was 2.788 million ? the lowest overall jobless figure for September since 1991.

The figure was 117,000 lower than the previous month and 7,000 lower than September last year.

When adjusted for seasonal factors the unemployment rate remained steady at 6.8 percent, where it has stood for several months, and the number of jobless rose 9,000 over August, the sixth straight rise.

The end of the summer holidays usually sees a batch of new hirings.

"The weaker economic development is affecting the job market, though overall the job market remains robust," the head of the labor agency, Frank-Juergen Wiese said.

Many analysts think unemployment could edge up over the coming months as the manufacturing sector, the heart of the German economy, struggles in the face of waning demand around Europe.

"Vacancies continue to drop, the share of temporary jobs in total vacancies is increasing and several companies have reintroduced short-time work schemes," said Carsten Brzeski, an economist with ING in Brussels. Such government-subsidized programs, which allow employers to reduce production without cutting their workforce, were credited with keeping unemployment down during the 2008-9 financial crisis.

Germany is still doing far better than many other countries in the 17-nation euro area. Unemployment is above 20 percent in Spain and Greece.

New Study Finds That Arterial Stiffness Precedes Hypertension ...

ITASCA, IL--(Marketwire - Sep 24, 2012) - AtCor Medical (ASX: ACG), the developer and marketer of the SphygmoCor? system, which noninvasively measures central aortic pressure and arterial stiffness, announced today that a new study* published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that higher levels of arterial stiffness and central pressures were associated with increased risk of hypertension, but hypertension did not cause arterial stiffness.?The study used data from the Framingham Heart Study.

An editorial in JAMA by Dr. Debabrata Muherjee commenting on the article called for focus on preventing chronic?disease, saying that through identification of underlying causes, "clinicians may be able to move from today's?sick care system?to a true health care system that encourages health and well-being."?The editorial identified three key implications from the study:

 • Using arterial stiffness as a measure of cardiovascular risk opens up additional therapeutic?possibilities, such as exercise and weight management, to prevent development of hypertension
 • Noninvasive tools (such as SphygmoCor) can identify arterial stiffness and help prevent onset of hypertension
 • It may make sense to target arterial stiffness rather than treat hypertension after it has developed

Duncan Ross, AtCor Medical CEO, said, "This news has positive implications for AtCor. The methods to measure arterial stiffness accurately and noninvasively are pulse wave analysis and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, and the SphygmoCor system is the only device to provide a full range of parameters in a single platform.?Arterial stiffness is at the heart of one of our greatest health care problems -- hypertension.?It is estimated that by 2025 1.56 billion adults globally will be afflicted.?The call to action, both from a patient and payer perspective, is clearly earlier identification and treatment.?AtCor is well positioned to play an important role in this imperative."

CDC Report highlights need for more effective treatment?

The issue of hypertension was highlighted in a new US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analysis** revealed that of the estimated 66.9 million adults in the US with hypertension, 35.8 million did not have their hypertension controlled.?Approximately 16 million of those patients being treated with medication for their hypertension were still considered uncontrolled.

"Measuring central pressure and arterial stiffness is very helpful in selecting the most effective hypertension medication and in managing drug therapy," said?Matthew Budoff, a cardiologist and hypertension specialist at University of California, Los Angeles CA.?"If we see that a hypertension patient has significant levels of arterial stiffness, we are more likely to prescribe a hypertension medical with a vasodilating effect, one that relaxes the arteries.?Many studies, and our clinical experience, show?that drugs can affect central and brachial pressures differently, primarily because of their effect -- or lack of effect -- on arterial stiffness."

About AtCor Medical

AtCor Medical develops and markets products for the early detection of cardiovascular risk and management of cardiovascular disease.?Its technology allows researchers and clinicians to measure central aortic pressure and arterial stiffness nonininvasively.?The company's SphygmoCorr ? system visibly identifies the effects of reflected blood pressure in the central aortic pressure wave, effects which cannot be detected with standard blood pressure monitoring.?More than 2,900 SphygmoCor ? systems are currently in use worldwide at major medical centers, in physicians' offices, research institutions and in clinical trials with leading pharmaceutical companies.?The company's technology has been featured in over 600 peer-reviewed studies published in leading medical journals.?AtCor has operations in Australia, the United States and Europe.?For further information, please visit our web site at www.atcormedical.com.

To Unlock A Full Price AT&T iPhone 5, Just Restore It In iTunes

IMG_0358If you have bought an AT&T iPhone 5 without a contract over the past few days, chances are that you want to unlock it to use it on another carrier. The traditional process involves filling out an online form on AT&T's website, sending a fax (yes, a fax) to AT&T, waiting 5 to 7 days and restoring your phone. It turns out that it is much easier than that: just restore the phone in iTunes and it will be unlocked. We have confirmed the process with AT&T's technical support and successfully tried it with a T-Mobile SIM card. After restoring the device in iTunes, the user is prompted with the usual unlocking message: "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked." This message wasn't enough for me though. I need more proof that I could use the iPhone on every carrier and abroad.

Perjury counts aginst ex-Penn State officials retained??

Ex-Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley, left, and former university Vice President Gary Schultz lost their bid to have perjury counts dismissed arising from their testimony before a grand jury investigating child sex abuse against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

By NBC News and wire services

A judge in Pennsylvania on Wednesday rejected a bid by two former Penn State administrators to dismiss perjury charges against them arising from their testimony before a grand jury investigating child sex abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

In rejecting motions by former university Vice President Gary Schultz and ex-Athletic Director Tim Curley to dismiss the perjury counts against them, Dauphin County Judge Todd Hoover wrote that their contention that there is insufficient evidence to corroborate the charges will be more appropriately determined at trial. He also said prosecutors have given the defendants adequate information about which portions of their grand jury testimony are at the heart of the perjury charges.

Hoover did not rule on a motion by the defendants to dismiss the other count against them -- failure to properly report suspected child abuse. The judge indicated that he will issue a separate ruling on that motion, in which Shultz and Curley argue that the statute of limitations has expired.

Read the judge's ruling

Schultz, the school's former vice president for business and finance, has retired. Curley, the athletic director, is on leave from the university. Their trial is scheduled to begin in Harrisburg with jury selection on Jan. 7.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office declined to comment. A spokeswoman for the defendants' lawyers did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Clinton: Romney?s '47 percent' remark could haunt him in debates

Clinton (CNN)

Bill Clinton thinks the upcoming presidential debates are crucial for Mitt Romney, and that the Republican candidate's controversial "47 percent" remarks could come back to haunt him.

"I think if he's going to double down on that 47 percent remark, that will cause difficulties," the former president told Piers Morgan on Tuesday in an interview taped at the Clinton Global Initiative. "Because we now know the overwhelming number of those people work and have children, and the reason they don't pay federal income taxes is that median income is as low as it was in 1995 now, and until the current election season, Republicans and Democrats supported both the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit."

In a secretly taped video published by Mother Jones last week, Romney told attendees of a fundraiser that President Barack Obama's core supporters?47 percent of voters, according to the GOP hopeful?"believe they are victims" and "are dependent upon government."

"This is a rejection of basically more than three decades of bipartisan policy to support working families," Clinton said. "It's not a bunch of freeloaders."

[Related: Obama sees 'real problem' with Seahawks/Packers call]

The 42nd president was also asked to weigh in on the controversial call by NFL replacement referees that ended the "Monday Night Football" game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers.

"I did not think it was a touchdown," Clinton said of the Hail Mary pass. "And I thought the pass was intercepted. I thought the defender hit the ground before there was joint possession. And, yes, it means that we need to get the strike over and get more experienced [referees] in there."

Science-Based Medicine ? The Obesity Paradox

Being fat is bad except when it?s good. It?s called ?the obesity paradox.? (No, that isn?t a mis-spelling for ?two physicians who treat fat people.?) The adverse health effects of obesity are well established, but there are exceptions. Obesity appears to confer an advantage in certain subgroups with conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

In the News

Casual consumers of some recent media reports might interpret them as an excuse to stop trying to lose excess weight, especially if they are diabetic. Others might think we have been lied to about the dangers of the obesity epidemic. The reality is more complicated.

An article in the NY Times asks:

Obesity is the primary risk factor for Type 2 diabetes, yet sizable numbers of normal-weight people also develop the disease. Why?

The question is a bit misguided and the answer is simple. Obesity is the primary risk factor but that doesn?t mean it is the only risk factor or the cause of the disease, and non-obese patients who develop diabetes obviously have other risk factors. We know Type 2 diabetes is a multifactorial disease involving interactions between genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

The article highlights recent research showing that:

Diabetes patients of normal weight are twice as likely to die as those who are overweight or obese.

And not just in diabetes:

In study after study, overweight and moderately obese patients with certain chronic diseases often live longer and fare better than normal-weight patients with the same ailments.

That?s true. Overweight and obese patients undergoing dialysis have better outcomes. Overweight people have better outcomes from heart failure and peripheral artery disease. After cardiac revascularization surgery, obese patients have similar or lower mortality rates compared to non-obese patients.

A simple interpretation of these findings might be that obesity must not really cause diabetes, that being obese is healthier than being non-obese, and that the concern about an ?obesity epidemic? is misplaced. As usual, simple is wrong; reality is more complex.

Obesity and Diabetes

If you are overweight, the most effective thing you can do to prevent diabetes is to lose weight. The Diabetes Prevention Program study of patients with prediabetes?showed that weight loss was the primary predictor of risk for developing the disease. Weight loss and exercise lowered the risk by 58%. Losing 5-10% of body weight significantly reduces blood sugars and allows many type 2 diabetic patients to get off their insulin and medications. The ADA recommends weight loss both to improve diabetic control and to reduce the risk of complications.

If you already have diabetes, there is evidence that losing weight is beneficial. In the Cancer Prevention study, patients with diabetes who lost weight had a 25% reduction in total mortality and a 28% reduction in cardiovascular plus diabetes mortality. And the benefit persisted even if they regained weight. But patients who lost more than 70 pounds had small increases in mortality.

In the National Health Interview Survey, patients who were trying to lose weight had a 23% lower mortality rate than those who were not trying to lose weight, even if they didn?t lose weight! Actual weight loss was associated with increased mortality only if the weight loss was unintentional.

A JAMA study suggested that people who are normal weight at the time of diabetes diagnosis may not be comparable to overweight diabetics. They may be at a disadvantage due to other factors like their ratio of muscle to fat (?thin outside, fat inside,? or TOFI).? It may be a matter of fitness, not fatness.

Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk

A systematic review of 40 studies in The Lancet looked at the relative risk of total and cardiovascular mortality compared to a baseline of 1.0 for people with a ?normal? BMI of 20-25. Their data show that the death rate is lower for people who are mildly to moderately overweight, but it is greater for those who are underweight or very overweight.

BMI RR for Total Mortality RR for CV Mortality
<20 1.37 1.45
25-29.9 0.87 0.88
30-35 0.93 0.97
>35 1.1 1.8

Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain these findings. For instance, one study suggested that obese patients have an advantage because they are treated more aggressively. ?The increased risk in the underweight category is not surprising: some of those underweight people are malnourished, cachectic from cancer, or are in poor health for other reasons.

Morbidity: Death Isn?t the Only Consideration

If obesity doesn?t kill you it could still hurt you in lots of other ways and make your life less pleasant. In addition to the obvious practical, social, and aesthetic disadvantages, there are a number of serious health consequences short of death. The Wikipedia article on obesity-associated morbidity ?provides a handy list of all the health problems associated with obesity. It?s a long list, divided into 10 categories from cardiology to urology. It includes gallstones, infertility, congenital defects, gastroesophageal reflux disease, stroke, carpal tunnel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, obstructive sleep apnea, erectile dysfunction, and many others.

Summary

There really is no obesity ?paradox? ? there is just a complicated situation. Obesity predisposes to developing a number of health problems. Once those problems have developed, in some cases patients who are overweight have a survival advantage over patients who are not. That advantage diminishes as weight increases and eventually turns into a disadvantage when the weight gets high enough. Being underweight is also a health risk. Fitness may be as important as fatness. We don?t yet understand what all this means: we have hypotheses, but so far they are not supported by credible studies.

The Bottom Line

Obesity is a health hazard but it should not be over-simplified or categorically demonized. It is a complex issue with exceptions to the general rule. Science supports trying to control weight in general but it doesn?t support forcing every individual into the same mold of an ideal BMI range of 20-25.

Hometown Cable Selects Trilliant's SkyPilot Network for Rural ...

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?Trilliant, a leading wireless communications provider, today announced it has been selected to provide broadband wireless networking equipment for Hometown Cable, a triple play service provider serving customers in Ohio.?

Hometown Cable received a $2.4 million grant from the Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Services (RUS) program, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), to expand rural broadband access in its service territory. Trilliant's SkyPilot wireless broadband network will help reach customers who have been under-served or un-served due to distance and challenging terrain. The grant will fund wireless network equipment as well as create new jobs for project management and installation.

Hometown Cable recently acquired g-Wireless, a broadband Internet service provider. g-Wireless has an existing SkyPilot network that will be expanded for Hometown Cable's needs. "The reliable performance of our existing network made Trilliant's SkyPilot mesh network a logical choice for expansion," said Bill Kessler, project engineer and manager of Hometown Cable. "Trilliant's SkyPilot mesh technology does an exceptional job overcoming the challenges of our geography and delivering the throughput we need over long distances. The ease of deployment and operation is an additional benefit of Trilliant's SkyPilot solution that impacted our decision."

"Rural broadband initiatives continue to be important for many service providers across the country," said Arnie Liepa, senior vice president of channel businesses at Trilliant. "Trilliant's SkyPilot solution already has proven success for these challenging deployments and we are proud that Hometown Cable has selected us for their project."

WAV Distribution, in partnership with Moonblink Communications, will be providing the equipment and logistic services for the project. The first phase of the project will involve installation of network gateways, extenders and connectors to deliver wireless Internet access to residential and business customers as well as rural schools. The SkyPilot Element Management System (EMS) software will be utilized for provisioning, configuration and overall network management.

"As one of the first distributors to embrace wireless broadband technologies, WAV is proud to be supplying Moonblink and ultimately Hometown Cable with Trilliant's high performing wireless broadband platform to give under-served areas the opportunity to receive wireless Internet service," said Zach Hubeck, sales and marketing director at WAV.

About Trilliant
Trilliant is a global provider of communications technology that acquired SkyPilot Networks in 2009. Trilliant's SkyPilot products are carrier-class broadband wireless solutions that have been deployed globally by service providers, municipalities, public safety agencies and enterprises for a variety of wireless applications. Trilliant's wireless solutions are highly scalable, reliable, and deterministic mesh networks that simplify design, increase deployment flexibility, and dramatically reduce equipment and operating costs. In addition to serving the service providers, municipalities, public safety and enterprise customers, Trilliant has further enhanced the SkyPilot technology to meet the rigorous requirements of the smart grid for utilities. What Will Ice-Free Arctic Summers Bring?

This summer's record melt suggests the Arctic may lose its ice cap seasonally sooner than expected. What impacts can we expect?

arctic-sea-iceARCTIC SEA ICE: The Arctic is losing sea ice rapidly. The varying thickness of the remaining ice can be seen here, from thin, nearly transparent ice to older, thicker, snow-covered ice. Image: Courtesy of NASA

On Sunday, September 16, the sun did not rise above the horizon in the Arctic. Nevertheless enough of the sun's heat had poured over the North Pole during the summer months to cause the largest loss of Arctic sea ice cover since satellite records began in the 1970s. The record low 3.41 million square kilometers of ice shattered the previous low?4.17 million square kilometers?set in 2007. All told, since 1979, the Arctic sea ice minimum extent has shrunk by more than 50 percent?and even greater amounts of ice have been lost in the corresponding thinning of the ice, according to the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

"There is much more open ocean than there used to be," says NSIDC research scientist Walt Meier. "The volume is decreasing even faster than the extent [of surface area] as best as we can tell," based on new satellite measurements and thickness estimates provided by submarines. Once sea ice becomes thin enough, most or all of it may melt in a single summer.

Some ice scientists have begun to think that the Arctic might be ice-free in summer as soon as the end of this decade?leaving darker, heat-absorbing ocean waters to replace the bright white heat-reflecting sea ice. The question is: Then what happens? Although the nature and extent of these rapid changes are not yet fully understood by researchers, the impacts could range from regional weather-pattern changes to global climate feedbacks that exacerbate overall warming. As Meier says: "We expect there will be some effect?but we can't say exactly what the impacts have been or will be in future."

On thin ice
Arctic ice influences atmospheric circulation and, hence, weather and climate. Take away the ice and impacts seem sure to follow. There's more warming to come, as well, particularly in the Arctic, which is warming faster than the rest of the globe. Given cumulative greenhouse gas emissions, there's likely at least as much warming to come as has occurred to date?a rise of 0.8 degree Celsius in global average temperatures, most of that in the past 30 years.

The biggest impacts of the loss of Arctic sea ice, of course, will be felt locally: from the potential for more snowfall (which can act like an insulating blanket keeping the ice warm and incapable of growing) to more storms with stronger winds. These will also whip up waves to pound the shore, eroding it, as well as bringing warmer temperatures to thaw the permafrost?leading to "drunken" trees and buildings as well as villages slipping into the sea. A loss of sea ice will also affect the largest animals in the Arctic: seals, walruses and polar bears. "My people rely on that ocean and we've seen some dramatic changes," said Inupiat leader Caroline Cannon at a Greenpeace event on the Arctic in New York City on September 19. "We are the gatekeepers of the ocean. We speak for the animals. They provide for us so it's our time to speak for them," by arguing to ameliorate climate change.

Noting the climate change in Cannon's backyard, the rest of the globe is indeed taking action?just not the type that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "The world is looking at the Arctic as a new ocean to be developed and exploited," notes Arctic system scientist David Barber of the University of Manitoba, most particularly oil as evidenced by Shell's bid to drill the first offshore well in the Chukchi Sea. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the Arctic holds an oil and gas bonanza?and companies from Russia to the U.S. are lining up to start exploiting it.

Replacing Windows? Look for Seal of Approval.

Q: DEAR TIM: I'm about to start a window replacement project. My husband wants vinyl windows because of the easy maintenance, but I'm not a big fan. The number of choices is making it hard for me to decide which kind of windows to install. What are the best replacement windows? What should I know about how to replace windows? -- Laura B., Orlando, Fla.

A: DEAR LAURA: Window replacement is a huge industry. Not only do windows tend to be one of the largest energy thieves in the average home, but they also can be a time sink, with care and cleaning. New technology can let you spend more time enjoying life than painting windows or caring for them.

It's easy to see why replacement vinyl windows are so popular. They never require painting, and with minimal care they look like new for many years. Many houses have white windows and trim, so old windows can be replaced with standard white vinyl new ones with minimal work. The windows will match the house, and installation costs can be kept to a minimum.

Visit a local home show, and you'll discover that you can get home replacement windows in aluminum, wood, fiberglass and vinyl. What's more, you can get hybrid window replacements, in which different materials are used for the interior and exterior. For example, you may want the warmth of wood for inside, while your husband wants the convenience of vinyl outdoors.

I believe the best windows are those that have been independently tested and certified. Look for the American Architectural Manufacturers Association's seal of approval. The group tests windows for air and water infiltration, structural integrity and resistance to forced entry.

You can also look for certification from the National Fenestration Rating Council, which tells you about the window's energy characteristics. The NFRC also tests for resistance to interior condensation. The closer that number is to 100, the better the window prevents condensation. The best replacement window you can get will have both labels.

When you or a pro gets ready to install replacement windows, guard against one of homes' archenemies: water. Water leaks often happen after windows are replaced. Pay attention to voids at the base of the window frame when the old window is removed. It may be smart to fill any voids with caulk before the new window is installed. It's also good to paint any unsealed wood that was hidden by the old window.

Excellent caulking must be done where the window touches the window frame, both outside and inside. The exterior caulking is mission-critical to preventing water leaks. Be sure to use an approved caulk that's mentioned in the windows' written instructions.

Air leaks are another problem to guard against. Both homeowners and rookie installers think that just caulking the exterior will stop air infiltration. This is not always true. Air can move through the wall cavity behind siding, brick and stucco. This air can be stopped from coming indoors by installing an expanding foam sealant around the window after it's been installed. Be sure to use a foam that's rated for use around windows.

Obama: Romney is out of touch (+video)

With less than seven weeks until the election, the race for president is neck and neck. Both President Obama and his rival Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney spent time in the battleground state of Florida on Thursday.

President Barack Obama cast Mitt?Romney?on Thursday as an out-of-touch challenger for the White House, while the Republican countered that the U.S. economy "is bumping along the bottom" under the current administration.

The two men crisscrossed hotly contested Florida, their travel plans nearly overlapping in Miami. Florida is one of a handful of battleground states with large Hispanic populations that are expected to decide the close race for the White House. The president is not chosen by a nationwide popular vote but in state-by-state contests, making these states especially important.

Romney?worked to move past the furor over a video showing him telling donors last May that nearly half of Americans see themselves as victims entitled to government handouts, and that as a candidate, his job wasn't to worry about them.

But Obama made his most extensive comments to date on the subject, seizing the chance to make the most of a controversy that has knocked his rival off stride.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," the president said at a town hall-style forum aired by the Spanish-language television network Univision.

Seeking to change the subject,?Romney?disclosed plans for a three-day bus tour early next week through Ohio ? another important battleground ? with running mate Paul Ryan and sought to return the campaign focus to the economic issues that have dominated the race all year.

Less than seven weeks before Election Day, polls make the race a close one, likely to be settled in eight or so swing states where neither man has a solid edge. Obama has gained ground in polls in some of those states since the completion of the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago, while?Romney?has struggled with controversies of his own making that have left Republicans frustrated at his performance as a candidate.

At a fundraiser in Sarasota,?Romney?looked ahead to his televised debates with Obama this fall.

"He's a very eloquent speaker, and so I'm sure in the debates, as last time ... he'll be very eloquent in describing his vision," the Republican said. "But he can't win by his words, because his record speaks so loudly in our ears. What he has done in the last four years is establish an economy that's bumping along the bottom."
