Nitish Kumar, on his part, extended his warmest welcome to Bhattarai, who had visited New Delhi in November last year. Bhattarai was greeted amidst cheering crowds and driven under high security cover on the clean and painted roads of Patna. During the Summit, which was organised mainly to display a resurgent state under Kumar, the CM pointed out the deep cultural and socio-economic ties shared by Bihar and Nepal. Referring to Bhattarai?s visit, he said, ?The PM?s visit has added a new chapter in India-Nepal ties.? He added, ?Bihar?s people think of the Nepali people as their own.?

Two weeks ago, Kumar extended a warm welcome to Nepal?s Member of Parliament Pradip Giri at his janata darbar. And less than a week ago, 11 Maoist leaders from Nepal were acquitted by a court. Most importantly, the Bihar government has, of late, requested the Ministry of External Affairs to engage with Nepal on the river issue.

The river issue is as critical for Bihar as it is for Nepal. More than two-thirds of farmland in Bihar is vulnerable to floods in Kosi, Budi Gandaki and Bagmati?all of which originate in Nepal. During the 2008 Kosi flooding, several villages on both sides of the border were wiped out, displacing thousands of people. Some of the villages are still buried under yards of sand. No wonder Kumar spoke of harnessing these rivers, which can help the state from future catastrophes and can be mutually beneficial. He rightly said, ?The solutions to our problems are not possible without Nepal?s help.?

Indo-Nepal water management is also vital to address the severe power problems in Bihar as well as in Nepal. Nepal is faced with an acute power shortage. During winter, the power cut hours rise to about 14-16 hours per day. The northern grid of India is faced with a whooping energy shortage of 18,000 MW. The current demand in Bihar is 3000 MW in peak hour, but it only has an installed capacity 600 MW at present. Moreover, managing these rivers is also vital for the agricultural growth of Bihar, which is a priority sector in Kumar?s administration.

Unfortunately, however, even after decades of signing the water treaty, the two neighbours have not been able to reap any benefits. Besides a multitude of political issues, a major reason for failure of water talks with Nepal is due to the lack of effective participation by the states concerned. The central government did not consult

or seek states? involvement in its bilateral dealings. Although instability and politicisation of water issues in Nepal has not allowed any Indo-Nepal treaty to materialise, lack of participation from the actors of the states concerned has prevented steady progress in water talks.

There are two principal points of contention between India and Nepal over the Kosi Treaty ? the issue of water rights and that of the management, control and operation of the barrage. In Nepal, the Maoist party has stood against the Kosi Treaty since 1996 calling it ?anti-national? and ?discriminatory.? Bhattarai?s visit to Patna can alter the trust deficit that has held the Kosi treaty back for so many years. The new engagement is a step in the right direction. The two sides must keep the momentum going as mutual trust and cooperation is imperative for the completion of the Kosi high-dam project?the Detail Project Report of which is slated to be completed by February next year.

If the two sides prepare a common minimum programme and framework of action and arrive at a shared understanding on upstream and downstream rights, the Kosi project can move forward. At the same time, information sharing and cooperation on water issues is also an important element. In this context, the two countries have successfully held an experts consultation meeting and secretary-level talks on water issues in New Delhi last year. India has shown great flexibility on water issues lately and is willing to assist Nepal on a ?non-reciprocal? basis. Nepal too must cash in on the moment. The goodwill generated by Bhattarai?s visit can go a long way in forging a sustainable water relation between the two countries.

But much will depend on Bhattarai?s ability to deliver on peace and constitution making. Stability and peace are prerequisites for the beginning of any friendly cooperation. Unfortunately, Bhattarai is losing on the home front. With less than three and a half months left for the last deadline of the Constituent Assembly, the much-needed consensus among the political actors in Nepal looks elusive. Although Bhattarai has said that this is not a ?lingering instability? and that ?it takes a while for the water to settle after a major storm,? public patience is wearing thin for the present Maoist government.

Bhattarai is faced with strong opposition from the hardliners within his party, who have opposed virtually all government decisions since Bhattarai took over as the PM in August last year. He has been made to go back on a number of his Cabinet decisions, including on the issue of legalising land acquisition by his party during the People?s War days. There has been no significant improvement in maintaining the law and order situation and in promoting good governance. His party has come under severe national and international criticism for protecting rights violators. Just a few days ago, the Maoists came under heavy attack from opposition parties and international organisations for allegedly issuing death threats against two former UN officials based in Kathmandu and another well-known advocate.

Nitish Kumar rightly pointed out that Bihar and Nepal have similar problems, but ?some problems of Nepal must be solved before

they could be addressed in Bihar.? Bhattarai must get his house in order before embarking on any ambitious plan with India.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the lowest point in the history of American writers.

Two score and nine years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand, gave a speech known as ?I Have a Dream.? A great statesman and great writer, he spoke of another American who had lived a hundred years before, also a great statesman and great writer. Their speeches and writings are read and studied to this day and remain beacons of light and hope for millions in America and the world.

But the tragic fact is that the American writer lives on a mental diet of worry, doubts, and wishful thinking. While new communications outlets multiply, the professional writer, journalist and creative writer live on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity, saying they have no work, they can?t make themselves work, that there is no point in writing. Fifty years later, writing seems to have lost its power to move the writer or the reader, and writers languish in the corners of American society, which gladly lets them languish there. So I have come here to discuss our appalling condition.

In a sense I have come here to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And it was later agreed that among these rights was the right to a free public education that would allow the nation?s citizens to read and understand the nation?s basic documents and discover all the rights they were heir to.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation to ensure public literacy and reasonable mastery of written language, America has given public education a bad check which has come back marked ?insufficient funds.?

But we refuse to believe that every school district is too short of funds to have good schools and enough teachers. We refuse to believe that every newspaper and magazine and employer is too short of funds to fairly pay writers. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in those great vaults that hold plenty of money for entertainers, politicians, the insurance industry, the oil industry, the defense industry, and drug companies, none of which could function without writers to put words in their mouths or on their websites.

So we have come to cash this check -- the check that will give all citizens upon demand the education they have earned. We have also come to this hallowed spot, the printed page, to remind America that the matter is fiercely urgent. America?s public schooling produces masses of functional illiterates and dropouts, and their school boards tell us nothing further can be done. America?s colleges, in which I taught for twenty-five years, marginalize writing and speaking skills in favor of technical, business, or athletic skills. Teachers of college composition courses spend their time on ?classroom management? because their students are painfully unsure about their writing skills but unable and ashamed to communicate their needs. Teachers are expected to give inflated grades to students who cannot write a coherent paragraph in their native language, students who might, if given a grade of C, try to get the teacher dismissed or start shooting.

Those who never learn to read and write well are slaves--but not to those who do read and write well, because those two almost never meet. They are slaves to those who ensure that those two will never meet by demeaning both and instilling in them contempt for one another.
Writers, this is no time to engage in the luxury of saying ?Writers can?t ever make a living,? or ?Only chumps pay for content,? or ?People don?t read anymore,? and resign ourselves to doing something else. Now is the time to see the doors of opportunity opening to all who are gifted with writing ability, disciplined and driven to follow it as an honorable profession. Writers, it is your choice whether you write to inform, educate, inspire or entertain, but never should it be your choice to mislead. One day you must account to God or to yourself for what you did with your gift. You are fate?s finest instrument. What is the source of your doubt?

Writers, contradict those who say that mastery of the English language is an indulgence or a privilege or very common. It is not. Literacy is the one right on which all other rights depend. The powerful of America know this, and that is why they shut their doors against you and will you not to thrive. You have heard about the power of the pen. The year 2012 is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope writers will now be content to blog and tweet will have a rude awakening as the nation continues business as usual. One day the hunger for knowledge and understanding, so basic to humankind, will outgrow the pleasure of passing one's time unencumbered by the thought process. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America when the pleasure of mindlessness wears off, as it is wearing off like silverplate on brass in the year 2012, when more Americans than in 1963 are homeless, jobless and don?t have enough to eat.

But there is something I must say to my fellow American writers who stand on the threshold peeking into the halls of power, wondering if we can market our way in. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and cynicism. Let us reject outright cheapish ways to ?get known? and gain status when our aim is greatness.

We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not be lulled into passive acceptance of industry norms and the social opprobrium directed at us. Again and again we must rise and meet institutional exploitation and poor-mouthing with soul force and confidence. Our marvelous new militancy must not lead us to distrust the publishing or communications industries, because many of us depend on them to make what livings we can as freelancers, adjuncts, temporaries, and contract workers. It is our own fault that we have sold ourselves short. It is our fault because we agreed to write for nothing and then next writer and the next were asked to write for nothing. We believe that businesses and institutions control our destiny. Their destiny is indeed tied up with ours. But understand that it is not we who depend on them; the truth is that they are dependent on us, and not just for manuscripts and money but for our creative ideas and our capacity to inspire.

And as we begin to walk, supporting the tottering publishing industry that was once so eager to shut us out that it refused unagented submissions or works that challenged the views of their stockholders, we must pledge to look at one another and understand that a writer is not a lone figure in the woods or an ivory tower, as that great American myth would have it, but part of a vast community growing vaster--although they call us the unknowns, the unpublished, the unemployed, the unwanted. We can never be satisfied as long as there is a talented writer too poorly educated to write, or a talented writer who thinks that survival depends on work corrosive to the spirit. Writing is our mission and our service to humanity. There is nothing wrong with it or with us. We will not be satisfied until we win the fight for a writer to be a writer. We will fight for the independence of literature. We will demand value for our labor. We will not be satisfied with less than liberty and we will use every instrument to achieve it. We will not be bought. We will not be embedded. We will not sell ourselves short. We will not allow ourselves and our profession to be demeaned and disparaged. We are fate?s finest instruments. They know it. We know it. Why would we ever hesitate to encourage justice to roll down like waters and truth like a mighty stream?

I am not unmindful that some of you have become writers out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your dedication to truth left you persecuted and brutalized. You have weathered censorship and exile and depression and death threats. You have suffered for your creativity. All writers have been told that unearned suffering can be redemptive, a kind of honor. It is your choice to decide whether that is true and what your suffering accomplishes. The citizens of the United States of America are guaranteed freedom to write and publish, perhaps without honor, but also without retribution. We are proud of this. And we intend this day to take advantage of it, and to reclaim honor for our profession, if not for ourselves then for the writers of the future, who will have to be bolder than we were.

Writers who cannot concede a need to act should go back to scouring Writer?s Digest and attending conferences and using social media to market and promote themselves until they can admit that those petty, discomfiting tactics almost never work.

I have a dream that writers one day will not be judged not by whom they know but by what they do and how well they do it.

I have a dream that one day children will sit down together, read the same news or the same novel, and assume the freedom to assess, discuss and act on their reading and to write about it.

I have a dream that one day our news industry will be transformed into a selfless instrument of truth and justice.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that writers will one day will not brawl for same small slot on the bestseller list or on the faculty, but as colleagues will dedicate a portion of themselves to the advancement not only of their own interests but that of the whole profession.

I have a dream that American writers will one day value themselves because each writer, whether journalist, novelist, poet, letter-writer, scholar, or student performs a service to humanity, a service of perception, of a kind no one else ever born will ever give.

This is my hope. This is the faith with which I return to my writing. Have this faith and with me hew out of the mountain of despair a landmark of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform a nation in desperate need of transformation. With this faith we should study together, struggle together, support one another, stand up for our rights together, knowing we are fate?s finest instruments and our fate begins now.

Official: Caterpillar to build plant in Georgia

(AP) ? An official familiar with the project says Caterpillar plans to build a new manufacturing plant in Georgia, bringing an estimated 1,400 jobs to the state.

The official told The Associated Press on Friday that the plant will be built in the Athens area. The official requested anonymity because a formal announcement has not been made.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference for what he described as a major jobs announcement.

The Peoria, Ill.-based company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In November, Caterpillar announced plans to shift production from Japan to a new plant in North America to produce small tractors and excavators. The company said it wanted to move production of the equipment closer to its customers in North America and Europe.

(AP) ? Gay couples waiting for rights similar to those afforded to married couples got closer on Wednesday to a legislative showdown with Colorado Republicans after a Senate committee approved civil unions legislation after hours of emotional testimony.

Hundreds of people packed a hearing room at the Capitol to plead with lawmakers to give them legal protections traditional couples enjoy. The issue has gained traction as more states have recently passed either civil union or gay marriage laws.

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper urged lawmakers to pass civil unions during his State of the State speech last month, and more Republicans have expressed public support for the measure.

The bill, passed on a 5-2 vote with one Republican senator joining Democrats, is expected to easily clear the full Senate. The real challenge will be in the Republican-controlled House.

Shawna Kempainnen and Lisa Green urged lawmakers to allow them to have a civil union, describing the medical struggles of Green, who has multiple sclerosis.

"Truthfully, I need to know that Shauna can have what she needs to care for me," Green said. She said it's "inhumane" that she and her partner don't have the same legal protections as married couples.

"Every moment that I can spend with Lisa feels like poetry," Kempainnen said, adding that it's wrong for the government "limit how far we can go on our journey."

The bill addresses parental rights and child support when a same-sex couple separates. The bill would also grant same-sex couples other rights similar to what exist in a traditional marriage, such as the ability to be involved in their partner's medical and end-of-life decisions. It also would enhance inheritance and property rights.

Republican Sen. Kevin Lundberg, one of the opponents of the bill, said it undermines traditional marriage and goes against the wishes of Colorado voters, who banned gay marriage in 2006. He said the bill states civil unions are not marriage, but goes on to list marriage rights gay people would have.

"Do you not see that as being a legal jiu-jitsu to simply get around the term?" Lungberg asked Democratic Sen. Pat Steadman, a gay lawmaker from Denver who is sponsoring the bill. Lundberg asked Steadman if he would be satisfied with civil unions, or whether it was the first step to overturning the state's ban on gay marriage.

"I can tell you Sen. Lundberg that if this bill passes, I will avail myself of it," Steadman said. "I am a member of the class of unmarried persons who are eligible for this relationship, and it is one that I would seek. Beyond that, I cannot predict. The arc of history is one that bends toward justice," he said, triggering applause from the couple of hundred people in the room.

Steadman co-sponsored similar legislation that cleared the Senate with bipartisan support before being rejected in the House. That's where the bill's fate is expected to be decided again this year. House Republicans who oppose the bill hold a one-vote majority.

Republican House Speaker Frank McNulty has said he opposes the bill, but promises that it will get a fair hearing.

Opponents testifying in opposition to the bill used harsh language to say they believe homosexuality is wrong. They also worried that civil unions diminish traditional marriage.

"Anything that lessens (traditional marriage) lessens society at large. Marriage is the cornerstone of society," said the Rev. Bill Carmody, with Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs.

More than a dozen states allow either civil unions or same-sex marriage. The governor of Washington state signed a bill legalizing gay marriage Monday, and the New Jersey Senate passed a similar measure the same day. Both face challenges before the laws would take effect.

And civil union laws took effect this month in Hawaii and Delaware.

"It's encouraging to see people rise above the political fray to respect the dignity of my family," said Jason Cobb, a 37-year-old Denver attorney who has been in a 14-year relationship with Jason Prussman, 38. They have a 4-year-old son.

Cobb said passing the legislation will be a positive reinforcement for their child.

"And making sure that he knows that he has a secure family and that we offer them unconditional love and sense of security," he said.

Catholic College Courses You Can't Find Anywhere Else

College freshmen and their parents choose Catholic institutions of higher education not only for the schools? ability to impart and strengthen the Catholic faith, but also on the quality of the schools? academic offerings. One thing that truly sets Catholic colleges and universities apart is that they often offer courses not found anywhere else.

?

Catholicism informs nearly every topic, thus allowing Catholic colleges and universities the opportunity to teach in ways that show how faith intersects with everything from leadership to architecture.

?

God?s ?First Book?


?

That?s certainly true of Wyoming Catholic College, the state?s only Catholic college. While the school offers a Great Books-style education, it is its offerings in a Latin-immersion course, an equestrian course and a one-of-a-kind three-week Outdoor Leadership Program that set it apart from both its Catholic and secular counterparts.

?

Wyoming Catholic College partners with Lander, Wyo.-based, world-renowned National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) to offer incoming freshmen a backpacking trip in the Wyoming wilderness before school begins in August and a one-week winter adventure in January.

?

?There are other leadership programs out there, but truly nothing as practical or wholesome as what we do,? said Mark Randall, vice president for institutional advancement.

?

?Students learn how to choose a goal, plot how to get there, the food and equipment needed, resolving conflicts, teamwork and handling things you never dreamed would happen, such as coming to a creek that?s too big to cross,? explained the college?s president, Father Robert Cook. ?Learning all of this is different from the theoretical study of leadership in a classroom.?

?

All freshmen also take a two-and-a-half day wilderness medical-training course to learn how to manage injuries in the wild. The 21-day orientation has a heavy spiritual component as well. Groups are split into sections by gender, each with their own chaplain, student leader and NOLS staff person.

?

In addition to offering spiritual direction and the sacraments during the orientation, the chaplain is encouraged to find opportunities for spiritual or scriptural reflection during the adventure. For Father James Walling, the college chaplain, for example, that meant reading about the Transfiguration after a mountain climb, celebrating Mass on the peak, and reading about the Baptism of the Lord near a river.

?

The experience creates ?students who are very tightly bonded,? explained Matt McGee, director of the program. ?They overcome challenges together, like navigating deep river crossings or climbing high peaks that are above 13,000 feet. When they come back to the classroom, they?re prepared to handle the academic challenges because they met the other challenges that they weren?t prepared to do.?

?

?Theology of Creation?


?

While not as hands-on as the Wyoming experience, students at the University of St. Thomas in Houston are also learning about creation through a course titled ?Theology of Creation.? That course has been offered annually since the spring of 2009 and is taught by Sister Damien Marie Savino of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, who chairs the environmental science and studies department.

?

?The course integrates science and theology, along with contemporary questions such as evolution and environmental issues, with the Catholic intellectual tradition and the teachings of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI,? described Sister Damien.

?

The course was originally offered as a theology elective for students and a required course for environmental science and studies majors. Last year, the course became a ?synthesis course? in theology.

?

Learning in Rome


?

While colleges have long had study-abroad programs, one extremely popular trend among Catholic colleges and universities is the option to study for a semester in the heart of the Church: Rome.

?

One of the more popular and extensive Rome experiences is offered by Christendom College. Juniors are encouraged to take four courses in Rome either during their fall or spring semester. Among the courses studied while living in Rome are: ?Italian 101,? ?Roman Perspectives,? ?Art & Architecture? and ?Theology? (?Moral Theology? in the fall; ?Apologetics? in the spring).

?

?The classes are right there in Rome, near St. Peter?s, at the Istituto Maria SS Bambina,? said Sarah Federico, of Corydon, Ky., who studied in Rome this past fall. ?We have to cross St. Peter?s Square to get to class each day.?

?

?Seeing all of the people attending papal audiences and hearing all the languages spoken there opens your mind to the history and the universality of the Church,? she said. ?We saw St. Peter?s bones and went into the catacombs. Catholicism is everywhere, and learning there made the early Church come alive.?

?

?No other school can boast such a convenient location,? said professor John Noronha, who directs the program and has taught moral theology, art and architecture, and apologetics for the past two years. ?Living so close to St. Peter?s and seeing the Pope with such frequency creates a special bond between our students and the person of the Holy Father.?

?

Art and Architecture


?

Elizabeth Lev often teaches the ?Art & Architecture? course, providing tours of architecture and related arts, from classical antiquity through the Baroque age, exhibited in the monuments and masterpieces of Rome and Florence.

?

In addition to studying in Rome and Florence, the program includes visits to Siena and a retreat in Assisi. Students are also able to participate in optional trips to sacred cities such as Orvieto and Subiaco.

?

Professor Noronha said that student highlights have included ?audiences with the Pope, visits to pontifical academies and congregations of the Roman Curia, special Masses and meals with cardinals and ecclesiastical leaders, participating in the Lenten Station churches? tradition, and walking the ground on which the saints and Fathers of the Church once walked.?

?

Making It Practical


?

If there?s a common complaint about college courses, it?s that they are often too theoretical and less practical. One course, offered by John Paul the Great University in San Diego, flies in the face of that criticism. It is the university?s ?LaunchPad? course.

?

?LaunchPad was originally designed to encourage students to launch a business of their own and get them to start an endeavor before they graduated,? said Dominic Iocco, professor and provost at the university.

?

The course is taken during students? junior and senior year. Iocco described it as ?not your typical ?sit in the classroom?? course.

?

Iocco described some of the projects that students have launched.

?

?Students have done all sorts of different things, from creating a design firm to a full-service laundry business and a brewery. One group of students worked on a Web video series; another is working on creating a video catechism.?

?

One impressive outcome of LaunchPad is the work of graduate Tara Stone. Her project was creating the feature-length motion picture Red Line. The film is a contained-space thriller about a group of survivors trapped in a subway tunnel after it has collapsed.

?

Stone, originally from Monument, Colo., wrote a series of short scripts during her junior year in LaunchPad. By the end of her junior year, she proposed writing a feature-length script. She completed the script during the first quarter of her senior year. By the second quarter, the film was in production, and during the third quarter, it was in post-production.

?

Under the direction of Hollywood professionals, interested John Paul the Great students learn about camera operation, lighting, costuming, makeup and production.

?

?Even in the best film schools, students don?t get this kind of opportunity,? said Stone. ?Certainly, there?s no other Catholic college allowing you to work on a feature film.?

?

Red Line is currently being submitted to film festivals, with the hope of premiering it at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. Stone is actively seeking marketing and a distributor for the movie.

?

Second Chance Project


?

Sometimes the practical opportunities come via student clubs closely associated with degree programs. At Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) were nationally recognized for their work in designing the Second Chance Project, an effort to reduce the rate of recidivism in the state of Kansas.

?

With guidance from Dave Geenens, director of the School of Business at Benedictine, graduate Jordan Neville and others taught entrepreneurship classes to inmates at Lansing State Correctional Facility in order to help ex-offenders find gainful employment or start their own businesses upon release. The SIFE team also developed an outplacement program designed to help inmates find jobs after release.

Catholic Twist


?

Even when it comes to more traditional courses, Catholic universities often offer them in ways not found with their secular contemporaries. The faith and Catholic teaching can be brought into practically every imaginable course.

?

Walsh University in Canton, Ohio, offers a ?Catholic Short Stories? course through its theology department. The course, which has been offered for the past two years, explores Catholic thought and practice, as expressed through short stories; in particular, in the work of Graham Greene and Flannery O?Connor.

?

?We start with the original short story, Genesis 2 and 3, to frame the class,? described professor Matthew Powell. ?Nearly every story in the Judeo-Christian tradition will reflect that story at some time.?

?

Powell describes that as students read Graham Greene?s story The Second Death, they begin to see the connections between the story and Scripture, and then they discover how powerful a story is.

?

?It really impacts students this age, who are often struggling with their faith,? said Powell. ?Many Catholic students are worried that they?re doing something wrong because they?re struggling with their faith. They come to find their faith and make it their own.?

?

At Christendom College, Adam Schwartz teaches a popular course on ?The Catholic Literary Revival.? The course examines the literary revival of orthodox Catholicism in modern Britain in a wide variety of genres, including fiction, fantasy, literature, poetry, history and social criticism by authors such as G.K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, David Jones, Christopher Dawson, J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as Anglo-Catholic writers such as T.S. Eliot, C.S. Lewis and Dorothy Sayers.

?

Sometimes undergraduates are given opportunities only available to graduate students. That?s the case for architecture majors in The Catholic University of America?s sacred space and cultural studies concentration within the School of Architecture and Planning.

?

One of the courses, taught by Julio Bermudez, associate professor and director of the sacred space and cultural studies concentration, is ?Sacred Space Studio,? a graduate-level course that brings in world-class architects to work with students. This year, they brought in Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa as a professor in residence. Last year, they hosted architect Craig Hartman.

?

?Students explore how to use architecture to help others in their search for God,? said Bermudez. ?Students explore the importance of religion in daily life and how the spiritual realm relates to the physical. Certainly this is something you can?t find in other schools of architecture.?

?

While the studio is generally only for graduate-level students, this fall nearly half the students were undergraduates who were allowed to take part.

?

Human Embryology


?

Then there are classes that are so imbued with Catholicism that one can?t imagine them being taught anywhere else. That?s the case with the enormously popular ?Human Embryology? course at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. The course has been taught since the 1980s by now semi-retired professor Edwin Bessler, a zoologist by training.

?

?I was inspired to create the course after attending an Operation Rescue prayer chain in Pittsburgh,? said Bessler. ?The intensity of good and evil was so great that two words ran through my head: ?Teach them.? That?s how the course and Franciscan?s human-life minor came into being.?

?

The course has been so popular that even with two sections of it offered each fall and spring, Bessler still has a waiting list.

?

Why is it so popular?

?

?Schools do a great job training everyone for occupations such as accountant and dentist, nurse and lawyer, but do a lousy job preparing people for the most common vocation of marriage and family,? said Bessler. ?Students take this course because they crave to change the world and this course touches on fundamental issues.?

?

Bessler opens each class with a prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn. The course covers the events from fertilization to birth, all through a Catholic lens. The course examines all the issues relating to fertility and conception and the bioethical issues such as contraception, in vitro fertilization and abortion.

?

According to the ?Biology 203? course description, ?special attention is given to the event of fertilization, the first eight weeks of development, development and function of the placenta, fetal circulation, the hormonal control of ovulation and pregnancy, parturition, anomalies of development and infertility.? The course can be used as part of the science core.

?

Nursing major Kimberly Doudna, of Fairbanks, Alaska, said that the course appeals to students of every major.

?

?It?s known as one of the classes you want to take and you know you?re not going to get it anywhere else,? said Doudna. ?Professor Bessler provides clear, factual data along with many examples, stories and anecdotes.?

?

Asked how it might differ from a similar course offered at a secular school, Doudna said that the course?s focus is on ?protecting the dignity of human life from the first moment of conception.?

?

?I work in the Catholic teachings, no matter the topic,? said Bessler.

?

Describing one image he shares with students, Bessler says he had an artist create an image ?of Jesus in the consecrated Host next to a human person in a fertilized egg and the words ?Hidden Yet Present.??

?

?A fertilized egg doesn?t look like us, just as a consecrated Host doesn?t look like Jesus, yet it is,? he explained.

?

Bessler said the highlight of his career was found on the final exam of a female student who had attended Catholic schools all her life. ?On her final exam, she wrote: ?I came to this course pro-choice. I?m leaving being pro-life.??

?

Truthful View


?

Whether it?s literature, leadership, biology, architecture or business, the distinct offerings of Catholic colleges and universities demonstrate that faith and the Church touch on all subjects.

?

?Often families choose faithful Catholic colleges because of the spiritual life and campus culture,?but these colleges are just as unique?in the classroom,? said Patrick Reilly, founder and president of the Manassas, Va.-based Cardinal Newman Society. ?When they claim fidelity to Catholic teaching, it?s?not just a matter for theology, but promises a?truthful view of man and the world,?informing every topic?from scientific development and historical relevance to?business strategy and literary criticism.?

?

?In an increasingly secular culture, I don?t think there is a single college?subject that could be?taught in a truly??neutral? way,? added Reilly. ?It either embraces popular assumptions about what is important to man or it looks to an ultimate purpose informed by Christianity, which only a Catholic college ? and only a?faithfully?Catholic college ? can do with integrity.?
