Sometimes we get so busy taking care of others that we forget about ourselves. The spouse, the kids, the boss ? they?re all important, but you have to reserve a little time for taking care of yourself, too.
Maybe it?s? just a matter of taking a few minutes each day to escape the stress and get grounded. Judy Belmont says 10 minutes is all it takes, provided you use the time wisely. Divide your ?sanity break? into 1-minute increments and try to accomplish a series of short tasks, such as:
- Writing out 1 positive intention for the day.
- Thinking of 1 person to forgive.
- Identifying 3 things you?re thankful for.
- Meditating on an inspirational quote.
Belmont says exercising the brain like this each day allows us to manage stress rather than carrying it. Sounds like a smart 10-minute investment to me. (Stepcase Lifehack)
For more ambitious self-improvement projects, such as learning to cook or brushing up on photography skills, people used to enroll in night classes at the local community center or community college. Talk about a huge time commitment! Thanks to the Internet, we now have thousands of how-to videos right at our fingertips ? no commuting required. I?m personally addicted to the video tutorials offered by Lifehacker, but Pinar Noorata rounds up six other options that are definitely worth checking out. (My Life Scoop)
A lot of people wish they could keep a daily journal, but find that their commitment peters out after a few weeks. Leo Babauta says he was one of those people, until he discovered a few secrets, such as writing in bullet points rather than complete sentences. Sure, it?s a time commitment, but it can actually help you use your other time more wisely, Babauta says: ?I like that I can look back and see what the highlights are of each day ? this helps me to know if I?ve been focusing on important stuff, or frittering my days away.? (Zen Habits)
Still think you don?t have the time for self-improvement? Check out Ali Luke?s 10 suggestions for finding more time in your day. My personal favorite? I?m torn between ?Go home on time? and ?Delegate some chores.? Check out her list and see what you think. (Dumb Little Man)
