(AP) ? Busier factories and growing optimism among consumers could help the U.S. economy withstand the drag from government spending cuts and tax increases this year.

Manufacturing grew in February at the fastest pace in 20 months, according to a report Friday from the Institute for Supply Management. And a survey from the University of Michigan showed that consumer sentiment rose last month to its highest level since November.

The two reports follow other data that show strength in job growth and the housing market. Americans even spent a bit more in January compared with December, despite a sharp drop in income that partly reflected higher taxes.

"Consumers are spending, confidence is rising and manufacturing activity is accelerating," Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors, said in a note to clients. "Just about all of today's reports point to an economy on the rise."

Businesses and consumers appear to be shrugging off changes in federal policy that will likely slow the still-weak economy.

In January, Congress and the White House struck a deal that allowed Social Security taxes to rise on most Americans. The deal also raised income taxes for the nation's top earners.

And across-the-board spending cuts are set to begin Friday. The cuts could reduce government purchases and lead to temporary layoffs of government employees and contractors. They're expected to shave about a half-percentage point from economic growth this year.

"Many Americans are tired of the political wrangling and bickering," Chris Christopher, an economist at IHS Global Insight, said. "A certain level of political crisis fatigue has set in."

The economic data Friday was mostly positive:

? The Institute for Supply Management said its index of factory activity rose last month to 54.2, the highest since June 2011. Any reading above 50 indicates growth. The report showed a jump in new orders, higher production and more hiring at factories. Manufacturing has grown for three straight months, indicating that factories could help the economy after slumping through most of 2012.

? The University of Michigan measure of consumer sentiment rose to 77.6, the second straight monthly increase. The rebound in consumer confidence, seen in both the Michigan survey and another survey from Conference Board, suggests that some consumers have begun to adjust to smaller paychecks.

? Consumers increased spending 0.2 percent in January from December but cut back on major purchases such as autos and appliances. Income plunged 3.6 percent, though it followed a jump in December driven by dividends and bonuses paid early to avoid higher income taxes. The increase in Social Security taxes also lowered after-tax income.

? Spending on U.S. construction projects fell in January by the largest amount in 18 months, the Commerce Department said. Still, that the decline followed a nearly 10 percent increase in construction spending in 2012, the first annual gain after five years of declines.

Investors seemed to focus Friday on the gains in manufacturing. Stocks rebounded after the ISM survey was released. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 35 points, overcoming an early loss of 116 points.

One reason for optimism is that the job market is looking better.

Employers have added an average of 200,000 jobs a month from November through January. That was up from about 150,000 in the previous three months. And a drop in weekly applications for unemployment benefits suggests that employers have stepped up hiring further in February.

Some employers are even willing to pay more: After stagnating since the recession ended, hourly pay has been rising faster than inflation for the past three months. If such pay increases continue, they will help blunt the impact of the higher Social Security taxes.

Fast Food Increases Risk of Severe Asthma, Eczema

fastfoodmeal 265x165 Fast Food Increases Risk of Severe Asthma, EczemaParents, be careful when feeding your children fast food. Not only has the food been shown to be contributing heavily to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, but recent research has also found a link between fast food consumption and increased risk for respiratory problems. The study found that children consuming fast food at least 3 times each week are more likely to experience severe allergic asthma, eczema, and hay fever.

Involving over 319,000 children aged 13-14 from 51 countries and over 181,000 children aged 6-7 from 31 countries, the study was conducted using a questionnaire on diet and symptoms of asthma, eczema, and rhinoconjunctivitis. All of the children were involved in a research project known as?the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) ? involving over 100 countries and almost 2 million kids.

?If the associations between fast foods and the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema is causal, then the findings have major public health significance owing to the rising consumption of fast foods globally,? the authors conclude.

After accounting for the rate of consumption for certain foods such as meat, veggies, fruit, pasta, butter, margarine, nuts, milk, eggs, and fast food/burgers, the researchers concluded that fast food was the only food group to have a link in both age groups. Specifically, they found that 3 or more servings of fast food each week was responsible for a :

  • 39% increase in severe asthma among teens
  • 27% increase in asthma among younger children, as well as to the severity of rhinitis and eczema, overall.

The researchers also found that consuming fruit 3 times weekly results in a 11% reduction in severe symptoms for teens and a 14% reduction for kids. And if you?re going to turn to fruit for this reduction, you may find the greatest benefit from consuming vitamin C-rich fruit such as kiwi or camu camu. Not only are kiwi fruit benefits astounding, but the vitamin C content found within the fruit has been shown to provide significant protection against respiratory problems.

?What?s clear from this study as that?fruits and vegetables turned up as protective factors?and fast foods turned up as risk factors,? study researcher Gabriele Nagel, of the Institute of Epidemiology and Medical Biometry at Ulm University in Germany, told Bloomberg. ?Our study provides evidence toward giving dietary recommendations in order to prevent asthma and allergies in childhood.?

The research adds yet another reason to avoid fast food at all costs.

Still no timescale for 'contentious' papal conclave

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

The final hours of Pope Benedict XVI?s papacy, including his scheduled departure on Thursday from the Vatican by helicopter, have been planned in detail. But major questions remain over the timing of the choice of his successor, which some experts fear ?could go on a while.?

A date for the start of the secret papal conclave may not be chosen until the world?s cardinals formally meet on Monday for the first time since Benedict?s departure.

When Pope Benedict XVI steps down, he will head to the sleepy town of Castel Gandolfo, used by popes as a quiet sanctuary for 400 years, where he will await the completion of construction on his new home. NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports.

Observers say the Vatican?s leaden bureaucracy, the curia, could act as a brake on the election mechanism despite Benedict?s attempt to accelerate progress on Monday by amending ancient church laws.

Timing is important because Holy Week begins March 24, with Easter Sunday March 31. To have a new pope in place for the church's most solemn liturgical period, the chosen candidate would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17.

The decision itself may also be drawn out as cardinals struggle to overcome deep divisions and rivalries over who is best placed to get a grip on the Vatican and move the church forward from an era of scandal and intrigue.

?My sense is this could go on a while,? said NBC?News' Vatican?expert,?George Weigel. ?There?s no clear front-runner. There is also a serious concern at the way in which the bureaucracy is operating amid all of this. It could be a very contentious conclave.?

Thomas Groome, professor of theology and religious education at Boston College, Mass., said the timing and duration of the conclave remained ?anyone's guess.?

?My guess is that it will be a long one - certainly far longer than the previous. There is no front runner and a lot of issues to be weighted, most especially how to respond - finally and effectively - to the clergy sex abuse scandal.?

Church officials could be forgiven for being nervous: The longest papal election in history dragged on for two years and three months, lasting so long that three cardinals died and a fourth resigned before a decision was reached, in 1271.

The pope delivers his final audience in St. Peter's Square as he prepares to stand down.

The most recent conclave, in 2005, lasted only 24 hours ? not least because the death of Pope John Paul II was not unexpected and cardinals had been positioning to take over for many years.

In contrast, Benedict's decision to abdicate appears to have taken most of the Catholic hierarchy by surprise.

Matthew Bunson, general editor of the Catholic Almanac and author of 45 books, including a biography of Benedict, said much would depend on the length of the ?general congregations? ? Vatican meetings that discuss issues facing the church prior to the start of the conclave itself.

?If the cardinals are able to come to a consensus on a candidate or a few candidates, then the conclave will be relatively short,? said Bunson. ?If there is disagreement about the potential candidates, then the conclave may be a protracted one.?

He added: ?There does seem to be a general agreement that the new pontiff must be in a position to assume the challenges of the office quickly. Combined with the sense of urgency because of the looming events of Holy Week, that would give the cardinals some incentive to enter quickly and reach a conclusion in a relatively short time.?

That sentiment was echoed by the Rev. Thomas Reese, author of "Inside the Vatican: The Politics and Organization of the Catholic Church,? who said: ?I don't expect them to take more than three days. Last time it went over five days was in 1831.?

The Rev. Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, told the Catholic News Service on Wednesday that it is possible the world's cardinals will not begin meeting at the Vatican until Monday, and a conclave start date cannot be set until they have met.

Leading historian Michael Walsh discusses the impact of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation, his legacy and whether there's a chance that the next pontiff will be a non-European.

Lombardi said Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, will send out letters Friday formally informing the world's cardinals that the papacy is vacant and calling them to meet at the Vatican.

Many Vatican insiders believe the timing now points to a conclave starting Monday, March 11.

The number of cardinals eligible to take part has already been reduced by two, from 117 to 115, after ?Britain?s most senior Roman Catholic, Cardinal Keith O?Brien, stepped aside over allegations from priests of ?inappropriate behavior,? and an Indonesian cardinal recused himself because of ill health.

The conclave process, in which cardinals are locked into their rooms until reaching a decision, was a tradition that began in 1271 following frustration at the failure of the church to agree on a replacement for Pope Clement IV, who died in 1268. Eventually, cardinals were locked inside the papal palace in Viterbo by exasperated magistrates.

Pope John Paul II changed the conclave rules in 1996, allowing cardinals to leave the Sistine Chapel during conclaves to eat and sleep if necessary.

Modified protein could become first effective treatment for vitiligo

Thursday, February 28, 2013

Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine researchers have developed a genetically modified protein that dramatically reverses the skin disorder vitiligo in mice, and has similar effects on immune responses in human skin tissue samples.

The modified protein is potentially the first effective treatment for vitiligo, which causes unsightly white patches on the face, hands and other parts of the body. Loyola University Chicago has submitted a patent application for the protein, and researchers are seeking regulatory approval and funding for a clinical trial in humans.

I. Caroline Le Poole, PhD, and colleagues describe the modified protein in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Le Poole is a professor in Loyola's Oncology Institute and in the departments of Pathology and Microbiology and Immunology.

About 1 million Americans have vitiligo, and the condition affects about 1 in 200 people worldwide. Vitiligo is most noticeable in people of color, but also can be distressing to Caucasians. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system goes into overdrive and kills pigment cells, which give skin its color.

Previous studies have found that a protein called HSP70i plays a vital role in the autoimmune response that causes vitiligo. (HSP70i stands for inducible heat shock protein 70.)

HSP70i consists of 641 building blocks called amino acids. Le Poole and colleagues genetically modified one of these amino acids to create a mutant HSP70i. This mutant protein supplants normal HSP70i, thereby reversing vitiligo's autoimmune response.

Resarchers Jeffrey A. Mosenson and Andrew Zloza gave mutant HSP70i to mice that developed vitiligo, and the results were striking. Mouse fur ? affected by vitiligo -- had the coloring of a salt-and-pepper beard. But when the mice were vaccinated with mutant HSP70i, the fur turned black.

"The mice look normal," Le Poole said.

Some of the effects seen in mice also were seen in human skin specimens.

There are no long-term effective treatments for vitiligo. Steroid creams sometimes return some color to affected skin. But this treatment also thins the skin, and can cause streaks or lines. Bright lights, similar to tanning booths, also can return color, but can cause sunburns and other side effects, including vitiligo. Skin grafts transfer skin from unaffected areas to the white patches, but can be painful and expensive. None of the existing treatments effectively prevent vitiligo from progressing.

Le Poole and colleagues wrote that mutant HSP70i "may offer potent treatment opportunities for vitiligo."
